The Inaugural Cooper Trewin Golf Classic held at the Sandhurst Golf Club in Melbourne was a massive success with 90 players raising over $15,000 for the day on the Friday 28th October 2011.

Gerald Foley from National Mortgage Brokers who have been an avid supporter of the Cooper Trewin Memorial SUDC Research Fund wanted to do something to help raise some funds. “Robert spoke at our last conference about the fund and losing his son Cooper which not only moved myself to run a charity event we also had a lot support in the room from different lenders on the night.”

Gerald decided to hold a Charity Golf day and aptly named it the Cooper Trewin Golf Classic that was held on the 28th October and went about seeking support for the event from the local finance industry and contacts within the lending community.

“The support was amazing, NAB were on board early on. Thank you to Andrew Sammut and NAB staff who arranged a novel event for the day having a closest to the pin and sold raffle tickets for us on the day. CBA was a major sponsor providing the first prize valued at over $1000 and sending some teams to play in the event. Westpac also came on board as a major sponsor with a novel event of hitting the Westpac target to win a $300 Voucher which was won by a local Bairnsdale Rotarian. They also had 4 teams playing on the day” Gerald said.

The day comprised of a format known as “Jensen’s” which involved each player taking a drive, picking the best and then playing out their own ball. For each hole the 2 best stableford scores out of the team of 4 was taken and then averaged as we actually got washed out with approximately 3 holes to play.

“Even though we did not get to complete the course, the buzz and feedback from what was a wonderful event was amazing. The Young Holden Lion PGA Kevin Harris was available on the day to give lessons and was supporting the cause by being paid to take his shot. A special thank you must be said to Dave Claridge from Bairnsdale Riviera Golf who not only arranged for that to happen but also some absolutely amazing sponsorship by some of the biggest names in golf.”

Titleist, Taylormade, Callaway, Bridgestone, Sports Leisure and Dunlop all supported the day with some amazing prizes. Titleist were a major sponsor and provided each player with 2 of their premier golf balls to play with on the day.

Payless promotions supplied the shirts and stubby holders and have been an avid supporter of the Cooper Trewin Memorial SUDC Research Fund since its inception.

“Feedback has been wonderful, many participants walked away with a prize as we had so many, barely a hole went past without having the opportunity to win a magnificent prize supplied by a sponsor on the day. We also had an auction and the highlight was the $1700 raised for a Microflite Helicopter Ride that was donated for the day that involves a flight to the Yarra Valley, lunch, tour and wine leaving from Melbourne purchased by Apex Host.”

“Thank you all for supporting such a wonderful cause and given the success of this years event will certainly consider it again for next year as the support for it to happen again has been overwhelming with sponsors their throwing support behind it again to make it bigger and better for next year…..watch this space”
